Adjusting to Life’s Challenges

Life can present us with a number of unique and challenging changes. These changes can range from moving, buying a house, career change, getting married, ending a relationship, retirement, the list goes on. While change is inevitable, it may not always be easy. Adjusting to these changes can be incredibly difficult, therapy can help. If you, or someone close to you, is having trouble adjusting to life changes you are not alone. There are millions of people out there who have similar challenges. While adjusting to change can be difficult it is not meant to impact your ability to function. If your life changes are keeping you from living your life as you’d like to you may be experiencing symptoms of an adjustment disorder.

Understanding the New Life

New beginnings may not always be accompanied by the best circumstances. Many look forward to certain changes– graduation, job promotion, meeting someone and getting married, having a child, successfully raising a family, etc. Transitions, however, can be difficult even when it is something you are looking forward to. Change can be scary, even when it’s positive.

Change can bring about fresh opportunities. It can lead you on a journey towards self-discovery and self-awareness. It can provide the chance to take stock of your life and view your future with new optimism. When these happen, however, the transition can require taking some big steps that are not always simple.

What is an Adjustment Disorder?

Adjustment disorder can stand in the way of naturally adapting to the changes in a person’s life. According to Web MD, “Adjustment disorder is a short-term condition that occurs when a person has great difficulty coping with, or adjusting to, a particular source of stress, such as a major life change, loss, or event.” It can be caused by stressful events, such as a sudden change or crisis that negatively impacts your relationships, health, finances, job, studies etc.

Changes are to be expected and oftentimes we naturally adjust. Though not all change is the same. Many experience difficulty adjusting to major life changes which can lead to adjustment disorder.

Adjustment disorder can interfere with your inherent ability to adapt to the changes in your life. After a significant change, it usually takes about three months before you’re fully aware that your patterns or life routines, lifestyle, and even manner of thinking have similarly changed. For example, you may initially feel excited when you move to a different state or country or change your job. As more changes in your life such as your routines, lifestyle, and thinking process, you may experience distress and even feelings of panic.

Adjustment disorders can result in experiencing symptoms similar to depression and anxiety, as well as symptoms of physical illnesses. Symptoms often vary between individuals. If you experience the following symptoms three months after a stressful event, it may be helpful to consult with a therapist:

  • Excessive worry
  • Feelings of hopelessness
  • Sadness and/or frequent crying
  • Impaired social and/or occupational functioning
  • Sleeplessness
  • Nervousness
  • Restlessness
  • Physical pain or muscle tension
  • Behavior changes behavioral troubles, and excessive worry.
