What to Expect During Your First Therapy Session

Deciding to begin counseling can be a very difficult decision to make. While it is an encouraging, proactive way to resolve conflicts and overcome things that are getting in your way, you may still be worried about the unknown. With Carolina Counseling Services – Cameron Office we try to make the process as simple as possible. We understand that you have questions, we have answers.

Feel Right at Home

Making you feel comfortable, just like in your home, is important so we make sure that such kind of ambiance is what will welcome you when you come to see us. The waiting area and the offices are all deliberately designed with your comfort in mind – clean, pleasant and warm. In the background you can expect to hear soothing music to relax your mind and to quiet any other office noises. The environment is intended to allow you to relax and focus on yourself.

Filling Out the Forms

Like any type of appointment, there’s paperwork. We try to make it as simple as possible, having all of our forms available electronically through a secure portal. You can even complete them on your phone! The platform we use is HIPAA compliant so it’s not only easy, it’s safe.

Working with Your Therapist

Our caring, helpful Scheduling Team will help you to select a contracted therapist that is a good fit for you and your needs. When you first meet with your therapist they will review your initial paperwork and want to hear from you about what brings you in. Your experience and goals are what is most important. Your counselor will want to understand a bit more about you and your needs before discussing a treatment plan unique to you.

Sometimes the first session can feel overwhelming due to a great deal of things being discussed, this is natural. Your therapist is there to help you work toward the goals that matter most to you. They aren’t there to impose their own agenda. Feeling comfortable with your therapist is important and this can take some time, we understand that.

If at any time you feel that your therapist may not be right for you it is alright to ask to transfer! Therapy is about you and what you need to move forward, asking to work with someone else is always alright. It doesn’t mean that therapy isn’t for you, no one can click with everyone!
