When is it Time to See a Child Therapist?
Audio Version
Behavioral health conditions can affect children, they aren’t just for adults. One in five children has a diagnosable mental health problem and unfortunately two thirds of them will get little to no help says Mental Health America. Your child’s condition can tremendously improve with proper diagnosis and treatment. The question is, how do you know if your child needs counseling?
Paying Attention to Symptoms
Anger, clumsiness, moodiness, and defiance can be normal feelings, reactions and even part of your child’s development. If these feelings and behaviors become extreme, however, there may be more going on.
If your child is experiencing changes in their behavior, appetite, sleep patterns, focus or mood it may be wise to dig deeper. These changes can be indicators of anxiety, depression, ADHD and other conditions.
Changes in functioning are also important to note. If your child begins to struggle at school, with friends or at home it may be helpful to consult with a child therapist. You will notice before anyone else if something is off for your child. If you are concerned it is worth addressing.
What is Child Therapy?
Child therapists and counselors are trained to work with children, addressing symptoms of behavioral health conditions and improving functioning. A therapist can help to assess what is going on for your child and develop a treatment plan that will meet their unique needs. Counseling can help your child to develop healthy coping skills and strategies to be successful in their life.
You don’t have to wait for things to become unbearable to see a therapist. Oftentimes parents will wait longer than they would like before seeking help. You and your child deserve the support that a trained therapist can provide.
