The Challenges of Adolescence
Adolescence can be one of the most difficult times in the aging and maturing process. During this time, teens begin to experience changes in the way they look, feel and think. So much is going on biologically to impact your physical and mental health.
During this stage adolescents experience many firsts as well, such as first crush, first love, self-awareness, the desire to be independent, and discovering a sense of self. While these are the very reasons why your life can become more interesting and exciting, they may also bring you many difficulties. There can be a lot of complications, particularly during the process of self-discovery.
“Who Am I”?
During adolescence many start to question who they are and who they want to be. This can be a time of growth and discovery. Many take cues from those around them and who they admire. This can sometimes be positive and sometimes negative, most of the time a mix of the two or somewhere in between.
While we can’t always control everyone that teens interact with, you can help your child to be surrounded by positive influences as much as possible. Addressing what messages they receive regularly can make a huge difference.
Developing a Healthy Sense of Self
Every individual has an innate idea of ‘sense of self.’ It is what others refer to as ‘self-identity.’ It is commonly described as your understanding and knowledge about yourself.
There are a number of socio-psychological concepts that may shape your sense of self. One of which is ‘the looking-glass self.’ According to Charles Horton Cooley, who conceptualized ‘the looking-glass concept, “a person’s self grows out of society’s interpersonal interactions and the perceptions of others.” This means that your self-identity can form as a reflection of how others perceive or see you.
While this is a possibility, it isn’t a necessity. We get to choose who we are, working with a therapist can help in developing a positive sense of self.
Navigating Adolescence with Counseling
While adolescence can be a difficult time, it doesn’t have to be just challenges. It is possible to enjoy this time of growth and self-discovery. Working with a trained therapist can make a world of difference.
Counseling can help your teen to process the messages they receive and figure out who they want to be. It can help them to develop a healthy sense of self and to assert their needs. With healthy communication and assertiveness skills they will be better able to stand up to peer pressure and be who they want to be, rather than who they think they “should” be.
