Deciding When to Start Therapy

Deciding to start therapy is a personal decision. It may not always be the first thing that comes to mind when you are struggling, but it can make a world of difference. Counseling can provide a place to process your feelings and identify what is getting in your way. Unfortunately, many wait longer than they need to due to viewing this as a “last resort”. The sooner your start, the sooner you can start to feel better.

Counseling has so many wonderful benefits. You may opt for in-person or online counseling sessions. Regardless of the setting, counseling can help you to feel better and to get to where you want to be.

What Can Counseling Help With?

Counseling, or therapy, can help with a variety of challenges and symptoms. Some of these may include:

  1. You are experiencing a major life change. In this life, there are just so many things that can possibly go wrong. You can get sick, have trouble in school, home or work. You may lose someone, have an unhealthy relationship, fail to reach your goals etc. So many things can change, sometimes for the better and sometimes for the worse. Even positive changes can be difficult to adjust to.
  2. You are having intrusive symptoms. If you are experiencing symptoms of a mental health condition, such as anxiety, depression, ADHD to name a few, counseling can be helpful. A trained therapist can provide a diagnosis and develop a treatment plan that is right for you.
  3. You are engaging in self-destructive behaviors. Unfortunately, we can all be a bit self-destructive from time to time. The key is identifying when our behaviors aren’t working for us and being open to making changes. Therapy can help you to identify what isn’t working for you and find healthier approaches.
  4. You have experienced something traumatic. If you experience a traumatic event you deserve support in processing what happened and finding ways to move forward. This is difficult to do on your own and you deserve a place to explore your feelings and find ways to cope. Counseling can provide this for you.
  5. Nothing feels right. If you don’t feel like yourself and you know things can be better, counseling can help. A trained therapist can help you to identify what is wrong and find healthy ways to move through it.

Psychology Today identifies some other times when therapy can be helpful as well. If you feel that you could benefit from therapy, you are probably right! You know yourself better than anyone ever could, start trusting your gut.
