Children Ages 6–18 Seeking Counseling Are Covered by NCHC

A little over 20 percent of American children, or one in every five, under age the age of 18, are suffering or have experienced at some point during their life a behavioral disorder, such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), depression, or other mood disorders.

The statistics on the number of children and adolescents with these health issues vary, but one study reveals that 17.1 million or 22 percent of American youths, can experience a diagnosable disorder before they reach the age of 18.  Unfortunately, the majority of them may not be receiving sufficient health care services.

Overcoming the Obstacles of Getting Professional Treatment

One roadblock of getting professional help can be the costs involved.  Not all children have adequate insurance coverage, so even if they get the health care they need, the family may be burdened with large medical bills. If they happen to have insurance, it is likely difficult to find a professional who can provide the services needed and who accepts the child’s insurance plan.

If you are a resident of North Carolina, and one of your children has an emotional, or behavioral health issue, an affordable health insurance program is available for children aged 6 to 18—North Carolina Health Choice (NCHC).  This state-supported health insurance program is available to meet the insurance needs of North Carolina children who do not qualify for Medicaid.

NCHC comes as a financial relief for families whose income is not sufficient to obtain private or employer-sponsored health insurance. With NCHC, uninsured children suffering from behavioral disorders can seek counseling and see a therapist who specializes in treating them at an affordable cost.

CCS and NCHC:  The Reliable Partnership That Provides Help

Despite the presence of behavioral health issues a child may experience, many affected youth may not be getting the help they need.  One reason is lack of access to professional help.  Without treatment, these young people may be at risk for a host of behavioral and emotional issues; including academic difficulty and disciplinary problems.

As a parent, it is important to recognize and be aware of the signs that your child may need counseling.  During this difficult time, you can let a therapist help your child resolve the symptoms that can deny him or her a fulfilling life.
